Homemade Healing Balm Recipe

homemade skin healing balm recipe

A homemade skin healing balm containing medicinal herbs that are naturally antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and astringent, making it the perfect addition for any herbalist’s first aid kit. This balm contains rich oils and herbs to create a soothing cream that can help in relieving inflammation, pain, dry skin, itchiness, and encourage healing.

Nothing like rubbing mystery ingredients on an exposed wound. No, thank you.

Coconut oil has been my go-to cream for many minor bumps and bruises, and while it’s helped me on many occasions, sometimes I need something a little more powerful.

My usual go-to “Windex” for healing creams has been my calendula cream, but I’ve recently started using this balm as another alternative.

Balms are thicker than creams, and don’t contain water. They provide better protection and can deeply nourish the skin due to the plant oils, butters and waxes used in these products.

This DIY antibacterial wound healing ointment by Small Footprint Family is a great cream for any minor wounds that may be of concern due to a susceptibility of infection. This salve contains essential oils known to contain antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Skin Healing Balm Recipe

As soon as the balm mixture has been poured into the glass containers, it will immediately start to solidify. This balm takes around 5 to 10 minutes to completely set, and then it is ready to use.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup calendula infused oil
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 4 tablespoons beeswax
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey
  • 10 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 10 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 5 drops oregano essential oil
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil

To Make:

  1. Set a stainless steel bowl inside a pot of water, and bring the water to a boil to create a double boiler. Add the beeswax, calendula infused oil, and coconut oil to the bowl, and heat the mixture on the stovetop over a low heat until the beeswax has melted, stirring frequently.
  2. Once melted, add in the honey, and stir it through the mixture to dissolve and combine with the other ingredients for about one minute.
  3. Next, remove the bowl from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly before stirring in the essential oils.
  4. While the mixture is still warm, carefully pour the liquid balm into your chosen containers. If the solution starts to solidify while you’re still filling the jars, return the bowl back to the pan of hot water and heat it on low heat until it liquifies again.
  5. Once filled, set the healing balm containers aside (with the lids off) and allow them to fully cool and set at room temperature. The healing balm will harden as it cools down, and once set, it is ready to use.
  6. To use the balm, use either clean fingers or a teaspoon to collect a small amount of the balm, and apply the ointment to your skin as needed. Please note that a little goes a long way.
  7. Store the healing balm in a cool, dark place. This homemade balm can last for up to 12 months, however, the potency of its medicinal properties may decrease with time and age.
