Coconut Oil Hair Mask for Dry, Damaged Hair

coconut oil hair mask recipe

This nourishing Coconut Oil Hair Mask recipe may help in repairing dry, damaged hair naturally. Whether it’s dryness, flakes, frizz, or fading, just head straight to your pantry for ingredients to whip yourself this homemade hair mask recipe.

I’ve turned to many natural remedies over the years to help with frizz, split ends, and damaged hair; hair sprays, natural shampoos, avoiding the use of hot hair tools…

But hair masks have been a recent discovery for me.

The change in seasons, indoor heat, outdoor elements, styling hair, hair products, treatments, dyeing, and more, can really take its toll on hair health. Overtime, our hair may become brittle, dry, weak and full of split ends.

Hair masks are great way to help restore moisture, proteins, nutrients (and in a sense… life) to dry, brittle hair. The best part is, there’s no need to go out and purchase expensive revitalising hair masks from the store, you can make your own at home!

Below is one of my favourite hair mask recipes to use on my hair to help nourish and repair dry, damaged hair naturally.

Please note that, when using any hair mask, to achieve the best results it’s important to continue using the hair mask over a length of time, at least once a week, to ensure your hair has time repair and strengthen.

Homemade Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Coconut oil has the ability to moisturise and nourish hair, preventing protein loss, and makes a wonderful natural remedy for dry, brittle, damaged hair.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup unrefined coconut oil, slightly softened
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil

To Make:

  1. In a small bowl, add the softened coconut oil and essential oils and stir well to combine.
  2. Apply a small amount of the coconut oil mixture at a time to the hands, and massage it through the hair and into the scalp in sections. Make sure to apply this hair mask from the roots to the ends. Once applied, comb the mask through the hair to evenly distribute the mixture.
  3. Allow this hair mask to soak into the hair and scalp for around 3 to 4 hours, or overnight.
  4. I like to put my hair up into a loose bun to sleep to prevent it staining my bedsheets and pillowcases. However, if you are concerned with staining any bedding, lay a towel over the pillows to prevent any oil transferring onto the pillowcases.
  5. To clean hair, wash the hair with a natural shampoo and warm water. It may take a couple of washes to completely remove the oil from the hair. Finish up by conditioning the hair as normal.
  6. Do this hair mask once a week to help strengthen and moisturise hair.
