How to Make a Natural Hair Growth Spray for Thicker, Fuller Hair

homemade hair growth serum

This DIY Hair Growth Spray recipe helps to nourish the scalp and strengthen hair naturally without the chemicals and parabens often found in commercial hair care products.

Most over-the-counter hair growth treatments contain minoxidil, a chemical which only works as long as the treatment is being used. As soon as the treatment stops, hair growth stops, too.

According to Hello Glow, ‘over 55 million men and women struggle with hair loss every day. And as we get older, our hair loss increases.’

Personally, my hair is ‘slow growing’, so it takes months to grow just a few inches.

There are four phases of hair growth; anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen. Each phase lasts for a different length of time:

  • Anagen is the growing phase, and at any time, about 90 percent of the hairs on your head are in this phase, and it can last about three to five years
  • Catagen is the transition phase, where hair follicles shrink and hair growth slows
  • Telogen is the resting phase, and it typically lasts around three months
  • Exogen is the shedding phase, so losing 50-100 hairs per day during this phase is normal, and it can last about two to five months.

Rather than going to a dermatologist or beautician to help encourage hair growth, I went to my pantry.

Natural Ingredients to Promote Hair Growth

This spray uses a combination of herbs and essential oils that are good for scalp health and hair growth.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary has been found to promote hair growth in a number of studies. In 2015, a randomised comparative trial was published that looked at the effectiveness of rosemary essential oil when compared with minoxidil 2% (a common treatment used to help hair growth). 100 people with the condition androgenetic alopecia, a genetic and hormonal condition that can result in baldness, were studied and, for 6 months, 50 of these subjects were randomly assigned to use rosemary oil, while the other 50 used minoxidil 2%. After 6 months, the results showed that both groups experienced a significant increase in hair count, suggesting that rosemary may be just as effective in treating hair loss as the conventional treatment minoxidil.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender may help to encourage blood circulation to the scalp, which in turn, may help to deliver more nutrients to the hair follicles.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary Sage is a wonderful essential oil that may help to balance sebum production on the scalp, and encourage new and healthy hair growth.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Cedarwood can help to strengthen hair and encourage hair growth by balancing sebum production, and may help to soothe itchiness caused by dandruff and dry skin.

Homemade Hair Growth Spray

As oils and water do not naturally mix, I’ve included the use of a solubiliser in this recipe to help combine the hydrosol with the essential oils, so they do not separate and sit at the top of the spray.

Ingredients:

To Make:

  1. Combine the essential oils together in a small bowl along with the solubiliser and stir together with a spoon to combine.
  2. Add the hydrosol to the glass spray bottle, then carefully pour in the essential oil mix and cap the lid on tightly. Shake the bottle well to combine the ingredients.
  3. Store the hair growth spray in a cool, dry, place out of direct sunlight.
  4. To use this spray, mist the solution onto the scalp 1 to 2 times daily. Comb the solution through the hair to ensure the solution is distributed evenly.

  1. Beautiful! Can’t wait to try it.

    1. I hope you like it!

  2. H!! This sounds interesting! Does it leave your hair greasy?
    Thak you 😊

    1. Great question, it can leave hair looking a little greasy after application due to the oils used, so I usually apply this serum to my hair the night before, leave it on overnight, then wash it out the next morning 🙂
