How to Make Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth and Dandruff Treatment

This DIY Rosemary-Infused Oil hair treatment is a great natural remedy to add to your hair care routine. Rosemary oil can be used to help soothe dry scalp, itchy scalp, dandruff, and promote faster hair growth, add shine, and seal in moisture to keep hair looking hydrated and healthy.

Pure rosemary oil (rosmarinus officinalis) is great for hair health as it may improve hair growth by ‘blocking the effects of DHT, a testosterone that shrinks hair follicles, leading to hair loss,’ shares Katie Wells, creator of the website Wellness Mama. Rosemary is also a vasodilator, meaning it has the ability to open (dilate) blood vessels, increasing blood circulation to the scalp which, in turn, stimulates hair growth. This helps to maintain healthy hair and prevent hair loss from excess shedding and breakage.

In a 2015 study, rosemary oil was compared with the hair loss drug minoxidil (Rogaine) for androgenetic alopecia, a genetic disorder brought on from an excessive response to androgens (a group of sex hormones). In men, this condition is commonly referred to as male pattern baldness, but it is also a common condition found in women, too. Results showed that hair growth overall was the same for both groups, but the rosemary oil group showed fewer side effects.

It’s important to note that there was no noticeable difference in either group at the three month mark. Not until six months of applying the treatment was a noticeable change seen in hair growth. While it may not take the full six months to see any changes, keep in mind that rosemary will need to be applied for a while before any noticeable results are seen.

Applying rosemary water to hair can be another effective treatment for hair loss.

Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth and Dandruff

As rosemary helps to increase circulation and is an anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory, it can help in treating dandruff build-up and soothe the scalp.

While herbal-infused oils are not as strong as essential oils, they still have many of the same beneficial properties and are safer for use on children.

When infusing rosemary with a chosen carrier oil, it will take a few weeks to meld and create a potent herbal oil, as all solar-infused oils take time to extract. But, it is well worth the wait for the beautiful oil you have at the end.

Once you have your rosemary-infused oil, you can then mix it with other hair and scalp nourishing oils like castor oil (though use this sparingly, as it is quite a thick and sticky oil), jojoba oil, argan oil or olive oil. When the hair shaft is coated with oil, this better helps sebum do its job of naturally softening, smoothing, and strengthening hair.

Coconut oil isn’t recommended to use as an infusing oil as it can clog hair follicles if left on for long periods of time, and it can also make hair look greasy and weighed down. This is of particular concern for those with thinner hair. Since rosemary oil is applied to the scalp, it works best when applied before shampooing. Just be sure to leave the hair treatment on for at least 20 minutes before washing off.

Alternatively, this rosemary oil can be applied before bed and left on overnight. Just make sure to lay a towel over the pillow so the oil doesn’t go everywhere. It can be washed off the next morning.

Homemade Rosemary-Infused Oil for Hair

This easy DIY rosemary oil can help to strengthen hair and moisturise the scalp, and is a great natural treatment for hair loss and dandruff.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup fresh rosemary leaves (removed from woody stems)
  • 1 cup (or more) of a carrier oil like olive oil

To make:

  1. Place the rosemary in a clean, dry mason jar, then fill with olive oil until the rosemary is completely covered, with about an inch or so of oil sitting above the level of the rosemary. Leave at least one inch of space at the top of the jar to allow for the rosemary to expand.
  2. Tightly cap the jar and place it on a warm, sunny windowsill for four to six weeks. Shake once or more daily.
  3. Once the oil has infused, strain out the rosemary leaves using some cheesecloth or a nut milk bag, and compost the rosemary. Alternatively, only strain as much as you need and leave the rest of the oil with the rosemary until ready to use.
  4. Pour the infused oil into glass bottles or jars and store in a cool, dark place away from direct light and heat.

To use:

  1. Part the hair and apply a few drops of the infused oil onto the scalp. Continue to do this all along the scalp, parting hair and adding oil as you move across.
  2. Use your fingertips to massage the oil into the hair and scalp, then leave it on for at least 20 minutes before washing off. Alternatively, apply the oil before bed and leave it on overnight. Make sure to lay a towel over the pillow so the oil doesn’t go everywhere. Wash the oil off the next morning.
  3. This rosemary oil can be used several times a week or daily.
