Jamu Juice (Turmeric Ginger Wellness Shots)

jamu juice wellness shots recipe

Jamu Juice is made up of a blend of fresh turmeric, ginger, lemon, water, and sweetened with a bit of honey. This immune-boosting elixir can be served chilled or warmed up over the stove-top for a health-enhancing tonic.

I first came across this turmeric ginger drink when my mother would make wellness shots for my siblings and I whenever we’d come down with a cold or flu, as a way to pack more vitamin C and immune-supporting ingredients into us to help speed up recovery.

This healing herbal root infusion is an all-natural, anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting elixir originating from Indonesia. The ingredients found in this juice may help with soothing inflammation, aiding in digestion, helping with nausea, and more.

What is Jamu Juice?

Traditionally, Jamu is an Indonesian herbal tonic made from natural ingredients including roots, spices, seeds, flowers, leaves and fruits.

There are many varieties of this healing juice. This recipe, most commonly found in Bali, is made with fresh turmeric root, ginger root, a little back pepper, a squeeze of lemon, and a dash of honey.

Homemade Jamu Juice Wellness Shots

Typically, Jamu juice is served chilled straight out of the fridge, but it can also be warmed up a little if you live in a colder climate or desire it as a tea.

This juice can be enjoyed first thing in the morning as a drink to prime your digestion, or it can be taken in between meals (as a 1/2 cup serving size). It also makes a great wellness shot to be taken when you’re feeling run-down, or symptoms of a cold or flu are arising.

I also love to add in a bit of cayenne pepper every now and then to enhance its’ health-boosting properties. You can also substitute in a medium-sized pineapple and remove one of the cups of water from the original recipe to add a delicious twist to this spicy tonic.

If it’s too strong or spicy for you, diluting it with a little more water can help.

Please note that turmeric can stain. So it is recommended that you wash your blender and chopping board immediately after using to help minimise this.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup fresh turmeric, rinsed and roughly chopped
  • 3/4 cup fresh ginger, rinsed and roughly chopped
  • 4 cups filtered water (or coconut water)
  • 1-2 tbsp raw honey (or other sweetener)
  • 1 lemon, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/8 tsp black cracked pepper

To Make:

  1. Slice the turmeric and ginger into thin disks, the skin can be left on or peeled if desired.
  2. Add the turmeric, ginger, black pepper and water to a blender, then blend on high speed for about one minute or so, or until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes, then strain it out through a fine mesh sieve, nut milk bag, or muslin cloth into a large bowl. Add in the lemon juice and honey, then give the mixture a good stir to combine the ingredients. Pour the juice into a large glass bottle or jar and refrigerate. Enjoy this juice chilled or warm.
  4. To serve warm, gently heat the juice on the stove-top until it just comes to a simmer, then serve it in a mug and enjoy.
