Long, luscious lashes are something we all dream about (or is that just me?). Thankfully, I’ve been very blessed with long, dark lashes. However, I’ve found that they seem to be getting weaker and less full (anyone else have this issue?).
I know many friends who’ve gone to great lengths to get longer lashes, but unfortunately many eyelash treatments like eyelash extensions, growth serums, etc. can cause infection, allergic reactions, or other problems in some people.
Naturally Long Lashes
It is true, there is a genetic characteristic playing part in many people with long lashes, but that doesn’t mean those without this blessed gene can’t increase their eyelash length.
I’ve been experimenting recently with improving the health and thickness of my lashes using some natural methods, and have found this eyelash serum (recipe below) to work wonders! Something to keep in mind though (which I had no idea about until recently) is that overusing eye products, like long-lasting mascaras or fake lashes, can actually weaken lashes and may contribute to lash loss. Since learning this, I’ve chosen to use fake lashes and mascara a lot less, choosing my time of use with them wisely. A bonus of this is that when you do use them, they look so much more extravagant, and people tend to notice more as they don’t see you wearing them all the time (you get a lot more compliments!).
Another thing to be aware of is that there does appear to be a connection between nutrition/diet and hair health. So, if someone isn’t receiving enough vitamin C, B vitamins, collagen, and fat soluble vitamins, hair (including eyelashes) may pay the price.
Natural Ways to Promote Lash Growth
Here are some tips for getting longer, fuller lashes the natural way!
Lemon and Olive Oil
Olive oil is wonderful for conditioning, lengthening, and protecting lashes, and by adding lemon essential oil to the mix, it brings antiseptic and antimicrobial properties too (but if you don’t have lemon essential oil, you can soak lemon peels in olive oil for a couple of days instead). Before going to bed, apply the lemon and olive oil mixture to your lashes, then leave on overnight and remove in the morning.
Brushing you lashes twice a day with a lash comb may help to stimulate growth and promote healthy lashes. The brushing helps to distribute that natural oils along the length of you lashes to help keep them strong.
Coconut oil may help prevent protein loss in hair. It is not for certain whether coconut oil may actually help stimulate hair growth, but it can help keep hair healthy, which in turn may help with appearance. Apply a thin amount onto your lash line before bed.
Dip a cotton ball in green tea and smear it over your eyelashes. The tea may help to clean the follicles and stimulate growth.
Organic shea butter contains good amounts of vitamin A and E, which can help nourish hair and follicles, and enhance growth. Simply take a tiny amount of shea butter in between your fingertips and melt it by rubbing your fingers together. Apply it onto your lashes before bed and keep it on overnight. Do this daily.
Vitamin E oil is rich in antioxidants that help promote healthy hair growth. Applying this oil may also improve blood circulation to the hair follicles. Grab a vitamin E capsule (a high quality one) and prick it open. Apply the oil present inside onto your lashes. Leave it on for 3-4 hours or overnight. Do this daily for best results.
This nourishing oil is a natural source of Omega-6 fats, proteins and vitamins that may help promote eyelash growth while hydrating the hairs. Combine 1-2 drops of castor oil, 1 drop lavender oil OR neem oil OR rosehip oil OR rosemary oil OR tea tree oil OR grapeseed oil, and a cotton swab or a clean mascara wand. Mix the two oils together and apply on the eyelashes carefully, then leave it on overnight. If you don’t want to use castor oil, other carrier oils like olive oil, almond oil, argan oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil work well too.
Eyelash Growth Serum Recipe
This serum will last up to a year as long as it isn’t contaminated with water or other liquids as it contains no aloe, water, or other liquid ingredients that can spoil. Note: You can also use this serum on eyebrows to help with thinning eyebrows.
- Mix all the ingredients together and store in a small dropper bottle.
- How to use: Squeeze one drop onto your finger or a cotton swab and gently massage into lash line. I apply it on before going to bed to let it do its thang overnight 😉, then wash it off in the morning.
- Use this serum daily for best results.
As always, this is not personal medical advice and we recommend that you talk with your doctor before trying or using any new products.
